30 Poems, 30 Days: Inside a Poet's Mind by A.D. Joyce

Genre: Poetry Collection

Price: Free!

Where to Get It:

Life always has its challenges: Some of them are heartbreaking and others can be a means to strengthen the spirit. For poet A.D. Joyce, April 2011 contained both kinds.

As a temporary distraction from the dissolution of her marriage, Joyce took on the challenge to write a poem a day and post them on her blog. "30 Poems, 30 Days: Inside a Poet's Mind" is the fruit of that labor--outpourings that reveal her state of mind and showcase her technique. As if the poems themselves were not revealing enough, she also includes a running commentary about what spurred her thoughts and her interpretations of her work.

"30 Days, 30 Poems," with sensitive illustrations by artist CJ Tittle, provides a unique insight into the creative process and how that process relates to just being human.

Mary Trentwood is horrified when she watches her father crawl from his grave the day of his funeral. Mistaking the newly-arrived Alexander Hartwell to be her father’s solicitor, Mary welcomes him into her home, not realizing he hunts a blackmailer.
Why is Trentwood’s ghost determined to make everyone think Mary is insane? Why is Hartwell snooping around Mary’s home rather than looking over Trentwood’s papers? Who is the blackmailer, and what are they doing in Mary’s home?

What they're saying about it:

"I don’t know how someone can find humor in a story about your dead father haunting you while a dangerous blackmailer lives under the same roof as you, but Belinda Kroll found a way." - Rachel Fisher, Goodreads.com

"This book has a bit of everything: snarky, searing wit which no character can escape; a spook lurking about with hidden intentions and unknown abilities; and some past sins – as well as more to come – that keep everyone on their toes." - Adrienne Dye, Amazon.com

This is a story of girl meets boy. The girl, Maxine-called-Max, never thought she would find love before she died. The boy, Phil-her-husband, never thought he would get a girl like Max to look at him. This is not a love story. That story is over before this one begins. This is a story of fixation.

What they're saying about it:

"Bizarre is a good word to describe this short story. It only takes about 10 minutes to read. I really liked Belinda’s writing style. She was able to capture a scene in time with very descriptive and compelling words." - Lisa Faber, Amazon.com

Double Take: a Hank Hammond, P.I. Murder Mystery by J.P. David

Genre: Mystery

Price: $0.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon (Kindle)

For iPad

Hank Hammond, ink hardly dry on his private investigator business cards, never anticipated that a chance encounter with a pair of suspicious characters and a mysterious crate would change his life forever. But it did, and nearly ended his life...also very much forever. And the deeper Hank gets into his investigation, the more the danger spreads until ultimately imperiling other innocent--and not so innocent--people, including his client, wealthy octogenarian Walter Tompkins, the client's favorite grandson Richard, and Hank's reluctant investigating partner, legal assistant Lori Reed.

Navigating the varied neighborhoods of Kingston Beach, California, from hilltop country club to Dumpster site, coastal marina to his own apartment, Hank unravels a series of crimes--past, current, and future--and with just the right combination of strength, skill, cunning, and luck he might just be able to prevent the most virulent crime of them all.

With swift pacing, engaging characters, and clever dialogue, J.P. David's Double Take: a Hank Hammond, P.I. murder mystery is reminiscent of Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series and Robert Crais' early Elvis Cole, with a bit of Sue Grafton thrown in for good measure.

What they're saying about it:

"Hank Hammond is da man! what a fantastic novel -- I loved it and eagerly await reading his next adventures!"

Cowboy by Staci Stallings

Genre: Contemporary Adult Christian Romance

Price: $0.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon (Kindle)
Barnes and Noble (Nook)

"Cowboy by Staci Stallings is a grace-filled story about the power of giving everything to God and how a simple act of compassion can change lives forever." Life has done its best to knock Beth McCasland to the ground, and the truth is: it’s done a pretty good job of keeping her there. Stuck in a minimum-wage job with a young daughter counting on her, Beth does her best to stay standing under the weight of it all because she knows God is on her side. Then one night she gets the chance to be an angel to another of life’s weary travelers. For once hope has never looked so real.

What they're saying about it:

"In some ways it's a reverse romance: though the `Cinderella' of Cowboy does struggle daily to make ends meet waiting tables at a rundown diner at the edge of town, and her Prince Charming comes riding into town not on a white horse but on a tour bus. Yet circumstances do not dictate character as the one who has nothing ends up rescuing the has-it-all from his spiraling depression."

Price: $0.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon.com (Kindle)
Barnes and Noble (Nook)
Smashwords (all eBook formats)

The road trip to Hell starts with a stolen car. Stan and Mike take what they think is an easy trip to Florida to deliver a collectible Cadillac. Little do they know that they're hauling something much more important in their trunk. And everyone wants it: The Feds, the Catholic Church, a deeply spiritual - if sex and cocaine addicted - Cuban drug lord, and a desperate PI dressed as a truckstop hooker. Instead of a week prowling the beaches of Miami, they end up in a showdown on a sleepy Sunday morning in Savannah. It's high noon in the garden of good and evil.

What they're saying about it:

"[E]very so often, I want to read about bad people doing bad things, and doing so with the kind of dark, twisted humor that shows us, not the banality of evil, but the absurdity of it. Jim Winter gives us all that, and more, in ROAD RULES"

"We've got blood, beatings, bullets, crooked Bishops, tough, sexy broads, and a bunch of rat bastards laying down a rat bastard routine. It's fast, it's wild, and it is frequently laugh-out-loud funny. In short: Road Rules is one HELLUVA ride!"

Chase McDermott hadn't thought about Lacy Taylor in years. When he last knew her, she was nothing more than a lanky teenager who was glued to his dorky younger brother’s side. Years later, she’s standing in front of him—grown up and he must admit hot--asking for a waitress position at his restaurant. Even though she doesn’t have previous experience, he offers her a shot and right away her sexy confidence and strong convictions begin to spark something unexpected in him. But when money starts to go missing, the pressure is on Chase to figure out which employee has the greatest motive.

Lacy and Chase’s relationship culminates in a windfall that neither of them ever fathomed and challenges Lacy to learn what it means to trust someone. Chase will have to push aside his stubborn, unemotional side if there’s any chance they can reconcile their steamy affair into a real future. Can they get past all the roadblocks or will they fall prey to their own troubles?

What they're saying about it:

"Once I finished "Looking for Trouble" the first book in this series I couldn't wait for this book to come out, literally looking everyday for it. This was a great read I loved the whole thing...not to mention the love scenes were hot. I see big things a head for Erin. Hopefully there will be more books in this series, I would love to see what happens to these characters."--Amazon Reviewer

It’s the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie’s husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.

Annie Fuller also has a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San Francisco’s most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl’s clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.

Nate Dawson has a problem. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to believe that Matthew Voss didn't leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.

Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted historical mystery set in the foggy gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

What they're saying about it:

"M. Louisa Locke, a semi-retired History professor has written a delightful mystery set in Victorian San Francisco. In rating a book it is of first importance that I care what happens to the main characters and she has do a good job of drawing them in multiple dimensions and in a way that leads you to care about them. Secondly I look to see if I can figure out the plot before I get to the end. While she is very good at foreshadowing who the the "bad guy" is by the end of the book I was still unable to figure out several of the plot twists until she skillfully revealed them. Third I rate a book by how much I look forward to my next reading installment. This book I carried with me to that when I had a few uncommitted moments I could continue to read it. By the end I was willing to lose sleep to find out how the locked room (actually locked house) mystery was accomplished.

Very highly recommended and I look forward to her next book when it becomes available."--Amazon Reviewer

The Innsmouth Syndrome by Philip Hemplow

Genre: Horror

Price: $0.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon (Kindle)

Smashwords (all eBook formats)

Veteran epidemiologist Carla Edwards has been dispatched by the C.D.C. to investigate a cluster of inexplicable mutations among the young people of Innsmouth, a sickly and destitute town on the Massachusetts coast. Initially skeptical, she rapidly discovers that the true mystery is older and more horrifying than anything for which her training has prepared her. As the danger mounts, a double helix of history and urban folklore draws her inexorably to the door of a sinister, evangelical cult - and beyond the limits of her science and belief.

What they're saying about it:

""This is a longish-short story based upon HP Lovecraft's Shadow over Innsmouth. When four Innsmouth teens die in a car-crash,their strange physical characteristics baffle local medics. The CDC is called in ,and we follow the progress of the CDC agent ,Carla as she tries to discover the truth about the grim, desolated town that is Innsmouth and its oh-so dark secret.

I was pleasantly surprised by this. Perhaps I have been guilty of snobbery about fiction based on Lovecraft's work, but this does not put a foot wrong.Innsmouth is vivid and real as is the general atmosphere of menace, bleakness and fear. The plot updates the story in a convincing and very respectful way.Like the 1931 source-story,this builds to a terrifying and unexpected conclusion."--Amazon Reviewer

But how will they ever fit in when they're destined to stand out? Or, perhaps more importantly, how will their friendship ever survive when the five Princesses all set their minds on one Prince?

What they're saying about it:

"There are also several fun fairytale "ideas" throughout, such as kissing toads!!! This novel is a real charmer and worth a read for the young and the young at heart!! Well done new author Stacy Lynn Carroll!"--Sherry Gammon, author "Unlovable"

"This is a truly enchanting tale, well written and with great imagination. It is a coming-of-age book full of real life situations. It is an easy read, the characters are well defined and they could be any of our kids. The many real life experiences the characters live are so aligned with reality that you may think this is a biography instead of a fictional novel. It teaches many needed life skills for young men and women alike."--Anna del C. Dye, author

"When I first started reading this book, I wasn’t sure if I would like it. It really isn’t the genre that I read. I was really surprised. The book is delightful. It was refreshing and I enjoyed the interplay with each of the girls."--Mary Walling

Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb by MJA Ware

Genre: Young Adult

Price: $2.99

When life gives you lemons, kill zombies — turns out lemon juice neutralizes the undead.

After a failed attempt at running away, best friends Nathan and Misty return home expecting to face angry parents. Instead, they discover the military has destroyed the bridges out of their rural town and everyone's fled—except a small horde of the living dead. The stress of flesh-eating zombies may be more than their already strained relationship can handle.

Even with the help of the town geek and lemonade-powered Super-Soakers, there's not enough time to squeeze their way out of this sticky mess. Unless the trio eradicates the zombie infestation, while avoiding the deadly zombie snot, the military will blow the town, and them, to pulp.

Their only shot is something with a lot more punch. Something like the Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb. But even if their friendship survives, there's another problem: Someone has to lure the undead into the trap.

What they're saying about it:

"What happens when your town is over run by zombies? Well you barricade yourself in the WalMart and come up with a plan to get rid of the flesh eating monsters of course!

The descriptions the author used easily had me envisioning not only the action but the smells that the characters described! I really found myself laughing out loud on several occasions, Nathan was often quite funny whether he was trying to be or not! I loved the bantering that went on between Nate and Misty and even though they figured out what would kill the zombies they didn't formulate a real plan until they hooked up with Kali the town nerd, who actually turned out to be quite heroic! Because parts of the book took place in WalMart I doubt that I will ever walk through WalMart again without thinking about this story!

A real page turner filled with zombie killing action and laugh out loud humor that kept me wondering what might happen next! I would easily say this book would be appropriate for anyone from ten to one hundred!" 5 Stars -Reader's Favorites

"I enjoyed Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb, it is such a fun -- and scary -- adventure. I couldn’t stop turning the pages as I watched Nathan and Misty try to make their way out of a zombie-infested small town. Nathan’s genuine voice wins over from the start. His puzzlement over how his long friendship with Misty seems to be changing now that they have turned into teens adds to the story, making it more than just zombie-whacking action -- not that zombie-whacking is in short supply." -- Laura Lond, author of My Sparkling Misfortune.

This is a story about God and the Devil, but not how you were taught to believe.
This is also a story about love and hate, and the suffering both can bring.
This is about rights and wrongs, and all of the spaces in between.
This is about revenge, courage, death, passion; with no villains, no heroes... only those left scorned.
This is a story about Heaven, Hell, and the Jury that holds them together.
This is The Antithesis.

THE ANTITHESIS #1: Justice Alezair Czynri is the newest recruit of the Jury, a group of powerful beings who reside in Purgatory and enforce the Code between Heaven and Hell. However, Justice Czynri could not have come at a worse time. A storm lays just over the horizon... One that brings with it a war.

What they're saying about it:

"Terra Whiteman's vision of Heaven and Hell is so refreshingly different from anything I have ever come across before, that I was sold." - The Eloquent Page, UK

"What I like about [The Antithesis] is its moral ambiguity. Heaven and Hell, angels and demons can't be categorised as good and evil. If anything you're much more likely to sympathise with the demons, in the same way that you would sympathise with Satan as he's portrayed in Paradise Lost." - Violin in a Void, South Africa

Death is sad, love is agony. Max was her next job. She got his name just before he died and it was for her to lead his soul to heaven. She was a Bringer. Then Max started pleading (as they often do), but not for himself, for his son, James. Would she look after him, would she comfort him as he grieved for the loss of his father? James was a sensitive young man. He would take his father's death very hard. Well, Bringers don't do that sort of thing; their exclusive role is to usher souls to heaven. They are not allowed to get involved in earthly affairs. However, when she saw James, she felt something she had never felt before – an emotion, a shock. She was a Bringer. Bringers do not have emotions. Yet she couldn't help herself. She found herself being drawn inexorably towards James and his life, against every instinct she had ever had, against every law of the universe. And she fell in love. For a Bringer, that is a terrifying fall.

What they're saying about it:

‘Very creative plot with twists and turns I didn't see coming. The romance between the main characters is absolutely enchanting! I was so drawn in by this book that I had to finish it in one setting. This definitely isn't another romance with a recycled storyline.’--Amazon Reviewer

Follow her, along with her family and best friend, Lindsay, as her health deteriorates and she must face the possiblity of never being able to live her life to it's full potential. This story captures you right away. The characters and descriptions of everything are just so real that you feel like you know them and are right there with them. The shaman tells her the heart breaking news that theonly way to protect her friends and the institute is through her own death.

Join Kassia on her journey of friendship, love, and the conflicts she must face to protect those around her.

What they're saying about it:

"I'm sick of hearing about vampires and werewolves. Now, the thing is zombies. But, I'll admit it, I have a soft spot for heroines with superpowers (I may be biased), which is Jager's fresh take on the young adult paranormal genre in "The Ultimate Sacrifice". This book struck me at the core and I don't usually read YA. It's intense nearly from beginning and all the way to the end. It is hard, fast, and brought tears to my eyes several times. Her protagonist, Kassia, is infinitely likeable, particularly for anyone who understands what its like to be outcast (and to have a temper you can't control!) I fell in love with the love interest and Kassia's best friend reminded me of my own. I highly recommend this book to anyone who adores young adult and the paranormal."--Amazon Reviewer

In a world of presumptuous people, irony is alive and well,” concludes James Morrison, the narrator of this touching coming of age novel. A view Shannie Ortolan - James’ longtime friend, sometimes lover, and full-time obsession - wouldn’t argue. From their first encounter as teenagers until Shannie’s death, experience the twists, turns and enthralling characters that populate Cemetery Street.
On the cusp of the new millennium, James fulfills a promise. Reenacting a childhood ritual, he places a mud pie upon a grave. This simple act triggers powerful memories.

Meet the people that shaped James’s life. Shannie, who among other things, introduces him to the sport of dodging freight trains. Count, the cemetery caretaker’s son, helps James navigate the minefields of adolescence until destiny is met in Desert Storm. Russell, an aging blind African-American, guards a horrifying secret behind a cloud of cigar smoke. Diane, Shannie’s mother, a college professor dispels the notion of tweed jackets and elbow patches. Steve Lucas, a mortician’s son, who despite bizarre obsessions, stands by James during his most challenging times.

Laugh, cry, and blush as James recounts events of a late twentieth century American life.

What they're saying about it:

"I had never heard of John Zunski when I started reading this book. Now I am a fan forever. This is one of the best books of this genre I have ever read. Zunski gives us complete characters and a great plot along with plot twists that keep you guessing and the end--what a way to end a book. I will read more of his work because of this book."--Charlene Perroni

Brilliant pre-med student Amoreena Daniels needs money. Desperately. Her mother is dying of cancer and her medical insurance has run out. When a seemingly perfect women’s clinic offers Amoreena a generous payment for service as a surrogate mother, Amoreena thinks her prayers have been answered. But then—much too early—her baby begins to move.

The strange dreams, another surrogate’s mysterious death and a drug-addicted former medical intern confirm Amoreena’s worst suspicions: there is something terribly wrong with the pregnancy. Amoreena embarks on a dangerous journey to uncover the truth behind the endless battery of genetic tests, sonograms and frightened patients, only to discover that she has unwittingly become a pawn in a high-stakes game of biomedical experimentation.

What they're saying about it:

"Amoreena Daniels is a top-of-the-class pre-med student and she's helping her mother fight a losing battle with cancer. On top of everything else her mother lets her health insurance lapse and now she's not covered for any of the expensive treatment for her cancer. What is a daughter to do? Well, Amoreena finds out about a surrogacy program and, after much thinking, signs a contract. Then finds out things aren't all what they seem to be.

This book was an easy read for me. It flowed smoothly, the characters were well-fleshed and the story progressed in a timely manner without excess description. I had a hard time putting it down. I wanted to know what the heck was going on, so I was compelled to keep turning the pages. Alan Nayes dropped breadcrumbs to the mystery in well-timed proportions. In other words, before I got too frustrated in the unraveling and peeked ahead. A fine balancing act!

The only problem I had was that Amoreena was an excellent pre-med student and she kept ignoring not only factual information about pregnancy in general, but her own gut feelings as well. I kept wanting to smack her upside the head, but it was only an occasional urge, so I was able, for the most part, to ignore it.

All-in-all a most excellent read! I definitely look forward to reading more books by Alan Nayes."--Amazon Reviewer

Pursued by a passionate Templar Knight and the target of the local vampire clans, an ancient power is awakened within her, unlike anything she’s ever known. Morgan must uncover the truth behind her mission and about herself, before the Darkness lurking inside swallows her whole.

What they're saying about it:

"I just finished reading this book and WOW, it was fantastic. The author has a real way with words that is so entertaining, and the story line was great. I like a heroine who has a great sense of humor and doesn't take herself too seriously, but is definitely able to get the job done. It was fast paced and kept me guessing until the end. The premise for the story is unique in my experience and leaves the door wide open for future novels in the Sunwalker Saga. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment! Great Read!!"--Amazon Reviewer

The Darkness grows inside her. A new power rages out of control. She is stalked through the streets of London by the vampire who murdered her.

Morgan must hunt her own killer. She must uncover the truth. Or humanity will be plunged into a war it can never hope to win.

What they're saying about it:

"Ever since reading Kissed by Darkness, I have been VERY MUCH anticipating the release of the second book in the Sunwalker Saga. I was NOT disappointed! Kissed by Fire reads clean, the pacing is fast and the dialog is clever and tight! Not to mention every chapter ends with a hook. And did I mention it's funny, too? 'Cause I wouldn't love The Sunwalker Saga if it wasn't also humorous. Add a badass vamp slayer, witches and other paranormal characters, a stud muffin templar knight, sexy dragon shape-shifters, and this makes for a SMOKIN' read! There are a few twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing, but the ending is satisfactory and surreal!

Shea MacLeod, you had me at dragon! You are now my FAVORITE paranormal author."--Amazon Reviewer

In a moment of pure chaos, the majority of the Earth's population became the walking dead. One man promises to unveil the truth.

When journalist Jacob Plummer is bitten by one of the undead he turns to the written word not only to ease the pain of change, but to reveal a truth that could spare the world from extinction.

As Jacob attempts to reveal the conspiracy behind the virus he fights off the undead masses to save the planet from a collision with entropy.

What they're saying about it:

"I'd never read zombie horror before, though I DO enjoy the occasional horror novel. I read Wallen's Fringe Killer series and his "Shero" before moving on to this and I have to admit--I should have read this one first.

This book is awesome. It has the author's trademark lyrical writing that tends more towards literary prose. It also has the cringe-worthy, skin-crawling gore and horror that Wallen does so well. He is a true horror writer, through and through. I fell in love with the protagonist, as well as the feeling of being inside Jacob's journal during the zombie apocalypse. I'm looking forward to picking up the next book in this series!"--Amazon Reviewer

Shero by Jack Wallen

Shero is not your ordinary super hero, that is unless you consider a cross dressing super hero a part of the norm. But unlike the every day super hero, Shero battles more than evil villains. Shero battles broken heels, runs in his stockings, broken nails, and the scorn of the public at large.

In this first installment Shero finds the perfect black dress, a possible lover, a deadly shade of fingernail polish, some nasty, nasty foes, an internal super hero political war, and a narrator full of attitude.

Caution: You may find yourself yelling "You go girl!" which could certainly lead to public humiliation. You've been warned.

What they're saying about it:

"With tongue in cheek humor and a splash of glamour, Shero is here to save the day. Standing for truth, justice, and stylish shoes, bad guys don't stand a chance against our superhero!

I loved this story. I especially loved the character of Shero who stayed true to himself even when it seemed the whole world was against him.

Suddenly I feel the urge to don a little black dress and go kick some bad guy boo-tay ..."--Amazon Reviewer

"I am the last true artist.”

Jamie Davenport is a struggling young officer on the Louisville Police Force. In her first homicide case, Jamie must track down a twisted killer who preys upon transgendered men to bring about The Change and transform them into their “true selves”.

“I am da Vinci with flesh.”

However, even with the help of her friend and mentor, Skip Abrahm, she finds herself fighting a war on three fronts: a victimized population reluctant to cooperate, a police force unwilling to take the crimes seriously, and a killer that is always one step ahead.

“I am a god with your gender.”

Warning: Contains adult situations and material.

What they're saying about it:

"I've said before that the hallmark of a good book is two-fold: If you're tired the next morning from staying up late to read just one more chapter (and then another, and another) and if your mind revisits parts of the novel days, weeks, or even months later, like remembered reaility instead of a fictional account. A Blade Away had me on both counts. If Wallen can handle serial killers, the transgendered, cross-dressers and the suspense genre in such a creative, finely-tuned, and insightful way as he's done with A Blade Away, then I can't wait to read his other novels!"--Amazon Reviewer
