Hits and Misses by Chinmay Hota

Genre: Humor, Essays

Price: $0.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon.com (Kindle)

The book is a collection of light hearted articles, which have delighted India's numerous newspapers readers. You will find many familiar and ordinary events, presented ingeniously by the popular author, Chinmay Hota.

Life is full of possibilities and pleasant surprises, just you need to have the eye to catch these special moments.

"Hits and Misses" is a book that makes you sit and wonder about the simple things in life. Chinmay has the ability to find magic in even common day-to-day events. The comparison that he makes between ATM and Atman is really thought provoking and I felt that he conveyed a deep message in a very subtle way. Looking forward to his next book now.

What they're saying about it:

"Chinmay Hota's collected articles in his wonderful book 'Hits and Misses' are compiled from "middles," short, humor-ous, and very popular essays he has previously published in his homeland papers such as the Times of India, and The Statesman. Obviously, his "middles," were placed between much larger, perhaps more 'urgent' global issues. But as I read his book, I began to see these "middles" as a welcome respite for his newspaper readers as they told of small happenings in every day India, an engaging way to let readers pause to catch their breath and perhaps get their bearings. For readers of his book, 'Hits and Misses,' his lucid and human way of rendering everyday events and musings is a brilliant way to bring India into our hearts, whether we live in Hawai'i, as I do, or London, or Botswana.

Hota's characters are universal, they are 'Everyman,' struggling to make their living in offices and public vehicles and in the streets. He relates to us the many moods and colors of contemporary India with humor and compassion and above all, gentle wisdom, describing the most ordinary events with a certain genius. He meditates on life's hits and misses, and how so much of it is unknown. But, he suggests, it is the unknown factor that makes this life unique. Nothing is certain, life is a miracle, and we are here to bear it, and to witness it.

I love his sense of adventure, of taking the road less traveled. And his ingenious philosophical departures, such as the impact of a slap as a way to express anger. This was quoted elsewhere , but I am compelled to quote it again. "A slap allows free play to man's innate aggressiveness, it does not harden his emotions into a set of techniques." A slap, Hota feels, is straight from the heart, and brings man face to face with his primordial self, so that he reconsiders the way he reacts to situations and people in his life.

I am an admirer of great contemporary Indian writers: Rohinton Mistry ("A Fine Balance"), Vikram Seth ("A Suitable Boy"), and of course Salman Rushdie ("Midnight's Children"), but sometimes their books have weighed me down with the chronicling of crippling poverty and hunger and disease of its outcasts. Yes, this is one aspect of life, but too much of it in one book becomes heavy-handed, leaving the reader deprived of the beauty and cultural richness of India and of insight into ordinary, every day people - like people everywhere - just trying to survive, hold a job, raise a family.

My wish would be that Chinmay Hota might give us a larger book next time, even a full-blooded novel or memoir, filled with the same quietly brilliant musings on his fellow countrymen. Till then we have the great gift of his book 'Hits and Misses,' a rich and varied spectacle told in flowing prose, showing the quirkiness and resilience of the human spirit. It is a wonderful book of familiar, ordinary things through which Hota illuminates India and its people."- By Kiana Davenport, author, HOUSE OF SKIN PRIZE-WINNING STORIES (Kindle)

"Hota's delightfully refreshing and humorous book will challenge you to reconsider the way you react to the situations and people in your life. The quote that comes to mind when I think about Chimnay Hota and his book, "Hits and Misses" is "carpe diem!" --Kathleen Stemke, Author

Professor Tikaya Komitopis isn’t a great beauty, a fearless warrior, or even someone who can walk and chew chicle at the same time, but her cryptography skills earn her wartime notoriety. When enemy marines show up at her family’s plantation, she expects the worst. But they’re not there to kill her. They need her to decode mysterious runes, and they ask for help in the manner typical of a conquering empire: they kidnap her, threaten her family, and throw her in the brig of their fastest steamship.

Her only ally is a fellow prisoner who charms her with a passion for academics as great as her own. Together, they must decipher mind-altering alchemical artifacts, deadly poison rockets, and malevolent technological constructs, all while dodging assassination attempts from a rival power determined the expedition should fail. As if Tikaya didn’t have troubles enough, her new ally turns out to be exiled fleet admiral, Federias Starcrest, the man who recommended taking over her nation. To trust him could be a mistake; to fall in love with him would be a betrayal to her people, her family, and the fiancĂ© she lost in the war. Those runes cloak more than mysteries, however, and he may be the only one who can help her unravel them before their secrets destroy the world.

What they're saying about it:

"Encrypted (A+) is a fun romp, an adventure in the Lois Bujold Barrayar spirit, with a clear ending though ample scope for more and which I highly recommend if you like your sff fast, page turning with action, mysteries and a dash of romance."--The Fantasy Book Critic

"This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter fantasy--there are a few unique steampunk and sci-fi elements thrown in as well. The characters were fun (my #1 requirement in a book), and the action moved right along--fans of speculative fiction should not be disappointed! I'll be reading Emperor's Edge, the next book set in this world, for sure, and am looking forward to more from Ms. Buroker."--Smashwords Reviewer

If you had three days’ warning of the end of civilization and a safe place to hide:

What would you take with you? Who would you save?

And who would you leave behind?

Henry Willingham and his friends have three days to make the most terrifying decisions of their lives. The world has been infected by an inescapable living nightmare of alien vegetation that will replace all life on Earth. They must get everyone they love safely underground into a fallout shelter. There's not enough time. There’s not enough room for everyone. Who will they save? Who will they leave behind?

How will they live with the consequences?

After hiding underground for a year, the last three survivors must brave the otherworldly infestation and travel through what used to be upstate New York struggling for their lives and their humanity.

What they're saying about it:

"I enjoyed Luminous and Ominous. The questions it poses are fantastic; who would you take and who would you leave behind in the last days of our invaded planet? When is it time to resist and when is it time to except those things one cannot change? The main character Henry wrestles with these very questions. We follow his journey through the days of the invasion of Earth by the beautifully described Cornucopia Blue. With subtle influences from H G Wells War of the Worlds it puts a modern slant on the fears that this type of invasion could conjure and expresses the emotional turmoil felt by the variety of characters. With beautifully descriptive prose and gently moving situations, we follow Henry and those he chooses to take with him through a well conceived journey through uncertain times. I live in anticipation of the next book which will hopefully round off Henry and Earth's journey to a satisfactory conclusion."--Pippa Boreham of Indie Fantasy Review

"The alien "invaders" of this unique science fictionish novel are exactly what the title tells us, Luminous and Ominous, a ravenous plant species with a mesmerizing beauty and a will to live as strong-or perhaps stronger-than any human survivor. And therein lies the problem for our protagonists: not just surviving in a new world, but preserving their very sense of what it means to be alive, and be human.
I'm a bigger fan of Noah K. Mullette-Gillman's second novel than I was of the first (and I'm a pretty big fan). The writing is as mesmerizing as the beautiful alien Cornucopia Blue it describes, and the characters' thoughts and struggles pull readers along with them just as surely."--Isabela Morales of The Scattering

What they're saying about it:

"WOW! Excellent novel .Coffee @ 4 kept me hooked ,this story is captivating , intriguing , honest and fresh , with impeccable narration. The actions and relationships of the different characters. are presented beautifully .Since the story occurs in an identifiable time and setting .it makes the subject familiar. This novel carried me along on an interesting journey due to an extraordinary turn of events and it almost took my breath away. While I was reading this novel it motivated me to think and feel about the behaviour and circumstances surrounding the characters of the story .It created an enduring impression . A fabulous Debut by Kavita."--Amazon Reviewer

"A very different perspective from what books set in India usually have to offer. None of the standard ingredients of politics, business or crime appear in this book. Instead, it deals with aspects of urban Indian life which are not often written about.

Ria, Geeta and Ryan are the main characters of the book. They are introduced by detailed narratives of the major events shaping their lives, which then provides an appropriate context to their characters. This book has multiple story lines within it, which ultimately join together. Overall, a very interesting read."--Amazon UK reviewer

When a New York socialite falls in love with a singer, his life is changed forever. But there's something strange about the woman he loves. Something tragic in nature, something deep inside her eyes. We never get to really know anyone. Not even ourselves.

What they're saying about it:

"It certainly promises to be good!

In a city as big as this one, nothing is tragic anymore. Everything becomes information. Deaths, births, diseases, fires, accidents, all become news, only meaninless data that must be sorted and stored in our mind for a while, than erased. No wonder history repeats itself. When so many events stopped affecting our lives, no wonder it's hard for us to understand that every single person we meet during our life is a human being just like ourselves. I think that this world is as big as we want it to be. People see only what they think they need to see. Some of them don't even know their neighbours even though they spend all their lives in the same house. Sometimes, a relative dying feels the same as a stranger dying half of world away. For the vast majority of people, the world is still flat as a sheet of paper."--Amazon Reviewer

Somebody is prepared to kill to prevent it being reopened – and is Caz's judgment clouding as she falls in love?

REMIX is a feel-good page turner, that you won't want to put down until you reach the satisfying ending.

What they're saying about it:

"Don't pass on this one. I doubt that any new books by Ms. Revellian will be had for such a give-away price, and I, for one, will pay more. The well thought out delivery of the turns and twists of the developing plot and the engaging characters were so well done that you will join me in the wait for more from this author."

"From the very first page (young woman finds a supposedly dead man asleep on her balcony) it's intriguing and develops into a genuinely involving story, well written (the pages seemed to turn themselves) and ingenuously plotted. It's also full of unexpected details, such as the rocking horses, and plenty of humour. The book's greatest strength though is the characters, especially the delightful Caz who's sassy and resourceful and utterly likeable. For her alone you'll read to the end."

Opening Act by Jack Swersie

Genre: Autobiography, Memoir, Nonfiction

Price: $3.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon.com (Kindle)
Barnes and Noble (Nook)

"Opening Act" is the autobiography of an entertainer who never achieved huge show business success but made a nice living warming up audiences for over one hundred legendary concert stars of the 20th century. Comedian Jack Swersie shares his recollections of having worked with talent as diversified as Perry Como, "Weird Al" Yankovic, the Smothers Brothers, Tim McGraw, Ray Charles, Milton Berle, B.B. King, the Beach Boys, the Four Tops, and Joan Rivers among many, many others.

But OPENING ACT is not just about the great stars with whom he rubbed elbows. Putting his thirty-year career in perspective, Swersie shares the highs and lows of a show business journey where he was always the number-two man in a business where number-one reigns supreme.

Swersie tells it like it was. From his days as a young actor, through the comedy club era, and on to the dreaded Catskill Mountains. From a cruise ship performance debacle to his very successful national television appearances in the mid-1990's. From his first concert work in 1981 all the way up to 2010 when he began to experience what felt like (but may not be) the twilight of a long comedy career. Swersie takes the reader along on his emotional roller coaster ride through a tough business called "Show".

Show business, from the often humorous and sometimes bitter perspective of an entertainer who never reached the top of his game but always made a good living doing what he loves.

What they're saying about it:

""Opening Act" by Jack Swersie is a interesting read about the Show Business we never get to hear about. Everyone knows about the "Big Stars", but when it comes to the hardest working people in Show Business, we know very little. Opening Act tells about what it's like to be a opening act for some of the biggest stars. Swersie bring to life the pressures and humor of warming up an audience for someone else. It's an easy & quick read that I found very, very interesting. If you like stories about this exciting business, I think you will love this book."

"As someone who's always been interested in show business, I found "Opening Act" to be wonderfully insightful. Jack Swersie gives the reader a refreshingly honest look into the world of comedy and proves that "there's no business like show business"!

"I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book by talented, show business comedian, Jack Swersie. What is is like to be an opening act for the biggest stars? A superbly entertaining & informative book, about dealing with stars, agents, audiences & landing those prime spots in the world of entertainment. Add a smattering of juicy tidbits, about various stars personalities & what it's like to work with them and their staff.... & you have an insightful, innovative & fun read. A compelling story into the world of what it's like to be the Opening Act."

Their investigation reveals a vast conspiracy of deposed aristocrats, wealthy industrialists, and warmongers plotting against the crown. Taziri discovers that her own inventions have been perverted by the conspirators, the cities plunge into violent riots, and their only hope for salvation may be an exiled princess, her swashbuckling escort, and a crippled airship plummeting out of the burning sky.

What they're saying about it:

"A great mix of intrigue, action and adventure. I'm already looking forward to more in the series." -- Goodreads Reviewer

"The best thing I can say at the moment is that I read this way too early. Now I actually have to wait around for the author to release the next books in the series to see what happens to some of the characters. The world is incredibly rich and almost seems designed from the best cultural eras for each geographic location. I truly hope he continues to explore the "what-ifs" for the rest of these cultures. Some of the characters tragically leave the story line too early for us to get to know them well, but I guess prequels could always pop up in the future. Looking forward to book 2."--Amazon Reviewer

What they're saying about it:

"Fantastic neuroscience thriller set in Thailand. Theta Head is 'The Beach' but for the iPod generation. Theta Head is a mystery which mixes new world technology with old world Buddhist faith. The main premise of the book centres around the disappearance of Ben and his girlfriend, Georgia as she travels to Thailand from London to find out what happened to him after he became entranced with a new technology to help him find himself. New Orleans Nocturnal by O'Neal de Noux

Type: Short Stories

Price: $2.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon.com (Kindle)

NEW ORLEANS NOCTURNAL is a series of nine short stories featuring New Orleans Police Homicide Detective John Raven Beau. Half-Cajun and Half-Sioux, Beau is a relentless pursuer, a man who will track a killer across miles of dark streets, through swamps, wastelands, over rivers and bayous. He will never give up. And he’s an excellent marksman who also carries an obsidian hunting knife. Claims that he’s scalped a few murderers is a persistent rumor.

Nocturnal. Occurring at night. Darkness.

STORIES INCLUDE: “Love and Murder” • “Don’t Make Me Take Off My Sunglasses” • “Murder Most Sweet” • “When the Levees Break” • “Pretty Rita” and “The Bonnie and Clyde Caper” – runner-up for The Short Mystery Fiction Society’s 2009 Derringer Award for ‘Best Long Story’.

What they're saying about it:

"New Orleans Nocturnal is a great collection of short stories focused on O'Neil DeNoux's continuing character John Raven Beau. Beau is relentless in catching killers but understands that sometimes a higher justice requires that they go free. DeNoux's character is convincing and his descriptions unique. I particularly like the suspect who "... blended as easily as a giraffe at a dog show." Having lived through Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath of Hurricane Rita, I am partial to those stories, but all the stories in this collection are well written and absorbing."--Amazon Reviewer

An Agent of the King by Nigel Slater

Genre: Historical Thriller

Price: $2.99

Where to Get It:

Barnes and Noble (Nook)

Archie Dexter, a hedonistic patriot becomes trapped in Egypt during Napoleon's invasion and plays a crucial role in the Battle of the Nile. Dreadfully wounded, he returns to England and joins the vicious, secret war against Napoleon's spies, moving rapidly from Spain to London, where he risks everything to save the life of King George. A gripping, realistic and at times bawdy adventure unfolds. A new novel by Nigel Slater.

What they're saying about it:

"This is the first historical fiction novel that I am aware of from Nigel Slater, a chef and the author of many cook books sold be Amazon. It is set in the time of Lord Nelson, 1798. The main character, hopefully of a series, is Archibald Fitzwilliam Lewis Dexter. He is an agent for a clandestine British organization, who is posing as a surplus staff officer in Lord Nelson' fleet just before the British victory over the French in Egypt.

Naturally, Archie Dexter is involved in giving Nelson an assist, all the while tracking French spies. This carries him back to England and the hunt for the spy network there. Archie is wounded, of course, and must also escape the clutches of the fair, and unmarried, Cordelia Hendricks, who wants to thank him "properly" for rescuing her.

The plot is well thought out and moves along nicely. It is without those slow spots that make you wonder if the author really had the plot thought out before he started. Nigel Slater's "An Agent of the King" has everything you want in the start of a series, a likable hero, spy and counterspy action, a little bloodshed and a girl who is looking to catch and marry our spunky hero. Maybe in later books, we'll meet the real woman of his life.

I enjoy books of this genre, so once I started, I had a hard time putting it down. Too bad one has to work. It's an excellent read and the price is right."--Amazon Reviewer

Some Quick Notes About Submissions

Hello everyone! I'd like to thank everyone who has emailed me eBooks to be featured and also to thank everyone who has bought and read these eBooks or subscribed to my blog.

Now that we've been going for several months now, I'd just like to refresh a few things about submissions to avoid confusion. My submissions tab is at the top of the page if you're interested in emailing me an eBook to be featured.

Firstly, I am not able to review eBooks. I can only feature them with your blurb, links, etc and some customer reviews. I'd love to be able to read these books, but I simply don't have the time with a full-time job, two novels of my own going, marketing, etc. I'm still receiving several requests for reviews per month, and I don't want anyone to be disappointed when a feature of their book comes up rather than a review.

Also, a note about post numbers: When you submit eBooks to be featured, you receive a temporary post number in return. This number isn't exact, but is close to where your eBook(s) will show up. It's more of a reference for me when I search my emails for the next post. If, however, Bargain eBooks is say, ten post numbers past where yours was estimated to show up, feel free to message me and tell me I goofed up! I'll get your submission in ASAP in that case.

Another thing: I do like to receive press releases for eBooks if they're under 5 dollars, in addition to regular submissions. I usually end up using them as future posts. If you've made a press release for a new eBook of yours, feel free to send it my way.

If anyone has questions for me, my email is hollyannehook84(at)yahoo(dot)com. I'll be happy to answer them.

My name is Darcy Anderson, and I am cursed with a dark power: Whenever my life is in danger, something inside me summons elemental fire to protect me. I cannot control this.

One night, I was attacked in my home. The fire ... it raged out of control. I survived the inferno, but my house burned to the ground - with my parents inside.

I was at a loss to explain to the courts what happened, and so they sent me to prison for ten years for manslaughter.

Now I'm out on parole, and all I want is to return to my home town and rebuild my life; but the man who attacked me is back to finish the job he started.

I can sense the power in me growing. If I can't control it, it will control me and destroy everything - and everyone - I love.

What they're saying about it:

"I think the thing that I really liked the most about this book was the very real emotional connections I felt to the characters. This could be any family, yours, mine or a family down the street. Their history, their conflicts, their feelings, wants and needs are very real. One of the things that draw me to the urban fantasy genre is both having a human story along with fantastic elements, and I felt this story did that for me. I'm really looking forward to the next four books."--Amazon Reviewer

"Once in a while a story comes along that reminds me why I love books so much. I was immediately drawn into the lives of the Darcy and her family, and all the problems with her trying to rebuild her life. While I really love Darcy, I think my favorite was Uncle Edward - he reminds me so much of my grandfather."--Amazon Reviewer

Camille by Tess Oliver

Genre: Young Adult

Price: $0.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon.com (Kindle)
Barnes and Noble (Nook)

At a time when society conforms to the strictest rules and most proper etiquette, sixteen-year-old Camille Kennecott and her guardian, Dr. Bennett, live a most unconventional life. They hunt werewolves.

When unwitting victim, Nathaniel Strider, wanders into one of their full moon pursuits, Camille and Dr. Bennett believe they have found a specimen for their study. Finding a scientific key to unlocking the mystery of lycanthropy would end their late night excursions. Yet beneath the irresistible exterior, Nathaniel is transforming into a flesh-tearing monster, and as each experiment fails, Camille loses another inch of her soul to him. In a month’s time, she must face the prospect of destroying the boy who has stolen her heart.

What they're saying about it:

"I think Tess Oliver is a very talanted author & I hope to see more from her in the future. This is the second book, Safe Landing being the 1st, that I have read of hers & I really enjoyed it. I really felt what the characters where feeling & the way she describes things make you feel like you are there with the characters. This story was well written with very few errors in editing. That is one thing that drives me crazy. There were hardly any until about the last three chapters of the book. And they were minimal. The story is about a girl who hunts for werewolves with her guardian, her fathers best friend. They track them & kill them before they can hurt or kill too many people. Well, the last one she hunted & killed bit a boy, well teenager(18-19). And she tries to save him along with John her guardian. And in trying to save him they fall in love & they don't know if it's enough to save him from the monster that he is becoming. You will have to read it to see how it turns out. I highly recommend it."--Amazon Reviewer

"The thing about Camille was that it didn't focus on a pack of werewolves fighting over a girl. Thank God it didn't. Instead, it was about a girl (named Camille) who falls in love with a boy (named Strider) who has been bitten by a werewolf. Strider now has a month until he turns into a werewolf himself, and kills everything in his path. Unless Camille and her friend/gaurdian Dr. Bennet find a good cure for Strider by then, they'll be forced to kill him (did I mention that they're werewolf hunters?). Overall, this was a really good twist on the topic, and the fact that the book took place in Old England was even better.

The writng of this book was gorgeous, with discriptive language that made you feel like you were there. I'm glad that Tess Oliver didn't rely on just her topic to make the story good. She has some real talent."--Amazon Reviewer

The Scavenger's Daughter: A Tyler West Mystery by Mike McIntyre

Genre: Mystery

Price: $2.99

Where to Get It:

Amazon.com (Kindle)

A Southern California self-storage unit filled with medieval instruments of torture…

A modern-day Torquemada hell-bent on updating the Spanish Inquisition…

An investigative reporter racing to connect the lurid dots…

Deadline has a whole new meaning.

Tyler West, suspended Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter from the San Diego Sun, is desperate for a scoop that will save his career. Defying a spiteful publisher and a vindictive homicide detective, he investigates the baffling deaths of several of San Diego's powerful, rich and famous. Police call the murders unrelated, but Ty uncovers a common link: torture devices last used during the Dark Ages, including the Iron Maiden, the Pear of Anguish, and the most sinister of all—the Scavenger's Daughter. Ty is plunged into a mysterious world of medieval torture scholars, antiquities collectors, museum curators, and sadomasochists. Aided by photojournalist Melina "Mel" Koric, a former Bosnian War refugee, Ty must break the brilliantly conceived series of slayings that has cast a dark shadow over a city better known for its sun, sand and surf. The elusive killer goes by the name Friar Tom, in tribute to his hero, Tomás de Torquemada, the first Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition. As Ty scrambles to unmask the monstrous zealot, he must juggle his investigation with his personal life: He pursues his lost love, Jordan Sinclair, an assistant district attorney, and continues to mentor inner-city kids at his youth golf clinics. With the city caught in an escalating nightmare of medieval mayhem, Ty is drawn into a lethal game of cat and mouse that could cost him everything.

What they're saying about it:

"I read it in one continuous, thrilling five-hour session. It reminds me of my favorite crime series--the Alex Cross novels by James Patterson--only more compelling and convincing."

"...this book is a revelation. From Friar Tom and the Billboard Bandit to the irrepressible Ty West, I love these characters. And the plot device -- which I won't give away -- is nothing short of inspired."

"The Scavenger's Daughter is a hole in one. In addition to suspense, wit and golf wisdom, McIntyre tees up a beautifully nuanced romance."

The dream that was Mars has become a nightmare for the children born there.

To save New Troy from despair, Claudia Cruz hosts the most popular racing show on two worlds. And to save the city from destruction, they’ll rally persecuted cloners, resurrected colonists, and racing celebrities to fight homicidal AIs.

HEIRS OF MARS follows the lives of six men and women through the final days of the first war on Mars, a war between humans, machines, and the resurrected souls who aren’t truly one or the other.

But even if they survive the war, there is no escape from the red planet.

What they're saying about it:

"Joseph Robert Lewis has written a compelling book that follows the lives of 6 sentient beings during the days leading up to the end of the war. Each chapter tells a piece of the adventure from one of those beings' reference points. The chapters are clearly marked, and I found this to be a very effective way to give us a more complete picture of what was going on in the minds of the humans, clones and machines involved in this war. The premise of the story was really intriguing, and brought up some interesting concepts; cloning people minutes before they die to save their knowledge, machines that seem almost human and yet they're not, Mars being a viable habitat for people when Earth is not enough. With the changing viewpoints and the engaging concept, this was an easy book to get into."-Motherlode

"It’s a brilliant book, a compelling story, well-told. Lewis has two short stories set in the same world, prior to the action in the novel. Guess who downloaded them both? Guess who’s getting eyestrain again?"--Marian Allen
